Tina Turner once said: “Sometimes you have to let everything go – purge yourself. If you are unhappy with anything – whatever is bringing you down – get rid of it. Because you will find that when you are free, your true creativity, your true self, comes out.”
As much as we go to great lengths to cleanse our bodies with strict juice cleanses or controlled diet programmes, we also need to keep our mental and emotional states free from clutter and toxic thoughts, feelings and even people. Detoxing the body is never simply about the physical body – it will always be a holistic effort.
So if you are serious about going through a full cleansing of yourself from inside out but have been neglecting a detox programme for the other aspects of your life – not to fret! We have rounded up 5 simple steps to purge your mind, emotions and psyche from all the unnecessary stresses in your life that may prove to be toxic yet.
1) Get rid of the toxic people in your life
Do this fearlessly, do this with conviction: people who are negative about everything, who put you down all the time, who cause lots of unnecessary drama… Cut them out of your life. These friendships are unhealthy for you – how many times have you felt lousy being around that one toxic “friend” who constantly belittles you? It may be painful initially to see these people walk out of your life for good; after all, change is always difficult. But, you will notice the positive effects slowly seeping into each aspect of your life. Your heart feels lighter from not having to deal with that “friend’s” drama. You no longer expend energy defending your choices to that “friend” who always tries to tear your decisions apart.
2) Do a mental purge
As a result of our modern lifestyle where we are constantly bombarded by text messages, emails or phone calls from friends, family and colleagues – our minds are often cluttered with long to-do lists. As women, we are even more prone to multi-tasking and trying to juggle too many tasks simultaneously. With such a cluttered mind, it is no wonder that you would feel tired and unwell all the time. Spend some time at the start of each day writing down all the things you need to get done. Sometimes, the act of putting your thoughts down to paper is a form of decluttering the mind in itself.
3) Reorganise your social media life
How many of us manage multiple socia media lives, each with its own network of friends and acquaintances? How many times have you tried to capture that perfect food flat-lay to post on Instagram only to find that it has gone cold by the time you are finally ready to tuck into it? While social media helps keep us connected, for some of us, it has become an unhealthy obsession. So many of us want to post up the best versions of our lives on our social media accounts that we lose focus on what truly matters – proper time spent with loved ones. So put that phone away during meals and when spending time with friends and family. Don’t let your FOMO on social media cause you to really miss out on living.
4) Declutter physically
Research shows that people who live in clutter tend to be more stressed out. It is no wonder, as being surrounded by too much junk that takes up space makes you feel physically constrained. We recommend taking a good, hard look at the physical clutter in your life in your bid to detox mind, body and soul – and making a commitment to get rid of things you don’t need. The act of clearing away unwanted material things has more than just symbolic value – it also generates positive and fresh energy, and creates mental and physical space in your life.
5) Relax before bed every night and let go
Sleep is nature’s way of restoring the body, so we should strive to put ourselves in a calm and relaxed state each night before going to bed so that our body will reap the full restorative effects of sleep. During sleep, tired muscles are repaired, cells are regenerated, damaged neurons are regrown and repaired. The body even detoxes itself naturally in sleep, as toxins are flushed out from the brain. To get the best quality of sleep, try to avoid using your phone or any device that emits a white light at least an hour before bed. Listen to some relaxing music. Spray a soothing scent like lavender. Put yourself in a really calm state of mind as you drift off to sleep. Your detox programme will thank you for this.
